It's been a while coming but this weekend, on the 13th April the Shotover Gorge trail will be officially opened.
Much hype has surrounded the project, which includes the above mentioned suspension bridge and a 108m mining tunnel that trail goers can navigate. The trail links Tuckers Beach Recreation Reserve and Arthurs Point and is the latest piece of the extensive Queenstown Trails Network.
The newly constructed bridge and heavily engineered tunnel will be major attractions on the trail and go along way to ensuring Queenstown is known for it's exciting trails and breathtaking scenery.
The tunnel, officially named the Hugo Tunnel was originally built to divert the Shotover River for gold mining, this historic tunnel has been re-engineered for cycling with support from the Hugo Charitable Trust, founded on the legacy of Hugh “Hugo” Green—a pioneer in New Zealand’s civil construction history. Not for the faint of hearted the tunnel is equipped with lights that enable walkers and riders to navigate the old pathway, however, don't spend too long in there as the lights work on a timer and only stay on for 2 minutes!
The Kimi-ākau suspension bridge which has been funded in part by local businessman/bike nut Rod Drury, is undoubtedly the jewel in the trail network's crown. Spanning 90 meters from Tuckers Beach recreational reserve across the Shotover River, the bridge enables the connection of Frankton and Arthurs Point and gives another great option for riders and walkers using the trails from Arrowtown to Queenstown or visa versa.

In conjunction with the Wharehuanui Trail which opened in October last year, the Shotover Gorge Trail marks the completion of Queenstown Trails ‘enhance and expand’ project, closing the ‘missing link’ through the northern edge of the Whakatipu Basin. The new trail also sets a high bar for the future and continues the amazing work that the Queenstown Trails Trust and their partners have done in connecting the greater Whakatipu Basin. Trail lovers will be expected in great numbers over the weekend and beyond as locals and tourists alike get out there to explore and adventure.
