Easy Trails: Beginner Friendly & Perfect for Families


Frankton Track:

Grade: Easy, Grade 2

Distance: 7km out to the Frankton Arm, 13kms to Kelvin Heights Peninsula

Best Time of Year: All year round

The Frankton Track is one of Queenstowns most easily accessible and family-friendly trails all year round. Its wide and exceptionally well-maintained gravel trail make it the perfect place for beginners.

Hugging the lakeside the trail makes it’s way from the Central Queenstown all the way round to the Kelvin Heights peninsula and boasts stunning views of the Remarkables over Lake Whakatipu.

Gibbston Valley Wine Trail

Grade: Easy, Grade 2

Distance: 8.7km one way

Best Time of Year: All year round

Arguably one of the best ways to spend a sunny afternoon in Queenstown, the Gibbston Valley Wine Trail combines stunning scenery with some of New Zealand’s best wineries. With cellar doors, vineyards and even local breweries dotted along the trail, what’s not to like?

Intermediate Trails


Coronet Peak Water Race & Bush Creek

Grade: Intermediate, Grade 3

Distance: 10km one way

Best Time of Year: Spring through Autumn

This epic trail traverses the mountainside of Coronet Peak, taking in spectacular views of the Whakatipu Basin, before beginning its decent into the old Gold Mining settlement of Arrowtown. It’s easily one of the most picturesque rides in Queenstown. 

Local Tip: Enjoy a beer and bowl of lemon, pepper hot chips at the Fork & Tap Pub afterwards. Those chips definitely make the shortlist for best in Queenstown.


The Coronet Loop

Grade: Intermediate, Grade 3

Distance: 50km loop

Best Time of Year: Spring through Autumn

If you’re looking to get slightly off the beaten track and enjoy some of New Zealand’s most beautiful backcountry then the Coronet Loop is for you. Start and finish in Arrowtown. 

A little on the longer side but well worth the effort this full-day ride is one of the best cross-country trails in New Zealand.

Advanced Trails


The Fernhill Loop

Grade: Advanced, Grade 4

Distance: 7.9km loop

Best Time of Year: Spring through Autumn

The Fernhill loop is a true Queenstown OG trail. Starting from Wynard Bike Park begin the climb to McGazza’s table with a steep and technical final ascent and be rewarded with views that are worth every drop of sweat.

Once at the top soak in the incredible scenery before taking your pick of the downhill trails on option. From fast and flowy to steep techy roots it’s an exhilarating decent with plenty of variety to keep you engaged. 

Local Tip: Head into town after and grab lunch from iconic Queenstown destination and world-famous eatery, Ferg Burger.

Ben Lomond Saddle

Grade: Advanced, Grade 4

Distance: 10-30km 

Best Time of Year: Spring through Autumn

Perhaps Queenstown’s most iconic decent, Missing Link track from the Ben Lomond saddle is South Island mountain biking at it’s finest. With two climbing options to get there depending on how big of a mission you’re looking for – either from Arthurs Point via the Moonlight Track, or from the Queenstown side via Queenstown Bike Park – either way you’ll be glad of a little e-bike assistance with steep climbs from either direction. 


Once at the top you’ll be able to enjoy fast, flowing single-track perfection. Following the natural ridgeline of Ben Lomond before descending into Queenstown Bike Park or joining the Fernhill Loop.
